Abstract

ABSTRACT ERROR ANALYSIS IN THE PERFORMANCE OF GOOGLE TRANSLATE AND ENGLISH TRANSLATOR IN TRANSLATING BOOK BY RAHMA TANIA ZAKIANINDYA The objective of this research is to find out the lexical errors made by Google Translate and English Translator in translating The Alpha Girls’ Guide Book by Henry Manampiring. The research applied the qualitative method. The data were analyzed using surface strategy taxonomy of error analysis from Joos theory. The results of this research show that Google Translate made 282 errors in total which consists of 36 addition errors, 69 omission errors, 135 misformation errors, and 42 misordering errors. Misformation errors is the most frequent error found in the translation resulting from Google Translate with a total 282 errors. Second, high frequent errors on omission which is mainly occured in the translation of adjectives and adverbs in which Google Translate mostly translated them into noun form. Third, misordering errors also found in translating sentences from The Alpha Girls Guide which is the machine can not detect the right position of adjective/noun itself. Last, the lowest frequency was in the addition errors which is some of additions –s or –ed added but in fact is not needed. Thus, it can be concluded that the translator machines still made many errors in translating book whether it has its advatages and disadvantages. Finally, an evaluation of the results of the analysis is carried out so that suggestions can be developed for improving langauge learning in the future. Thus, the analyziz of language errors is expected to provide pedagogical implications for improving the quality of learners. After finding of the learning process produced by the students, the lecturer can deal with the practical need of the learning process and devise appropriate materials and teaching techniques. The frequency of errors will enable the lecturer to teach at the point of error and to put more emphasis on those areas where the error frequency is higher.
