Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was aimed to find out the improvement of the eighth grade students‘ reading comprehension in Descriptive text using Context Clues Strategy at SMP N 1 Seputih Agung in the Academic year 2023/2024. This particular research was categorized as classroom action research. The actions were implemented in two cycles based on the class schedule. This research involved 31 students of class VIII G of SMP Negeri 1 Seputih Agung in the academic year of 2023/2024 and the researcher as the collaborator. The data of the research were in the forms of qualitative and quantitative data. Meanwhile, the result of the research showed that there was an improvement in students‘ reading comprehension. The students‘ improvement was proved by their reading comprehension test result which improved from test to test. In the pre-test, there were only 16.1% of students or 5 students who could pass the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM), and the mean score was 54.70. In the post-test 1 in cycle 1, there were 35.4% of students or 11 students who passed the KKM, and the mean score was 63.06. Therefore, there was a little improvement from the pre-test to the post-test 1. Then, in the post-test 2 in cycle 2, there were 77.41% of students or 24 students who passed the KKM, and the mean score was 74.51. Thus, this indicated that it had met the criterion of success that 75% students must get the score above the KKM. Meanwhile the result of the students‘ questionnaire also showed that their responses in learning reading was good. The students were interested, motivated, after being introduced to and practiced using Context Clues Strategy.
