Abstract
ABSTRACT The use of L1 in English classrooms is always happening at every level, from beginner level to tertiary (University) level. This research titled L1 in the L2 Classroom at the High School and University Levels: A Comparison of Functions Used by the Teacher aims to understand why teachers use their native language to teach a secondary language (in this case English) in a classroom where the level of English understanding is at an upper level. And not just, this research also tried to compare the different functions of a native language in an L2 classroom by observing the teacher or lecturer, and the final objective of this research to understand the type of bilingual teachers and teacher educators are. The participants of this research are the English teacher in SMAN 5 Bandar Lampung and the English teacher educator in UIN Raden Intan Bandar Lampung. Both of them have been teaching English for more than five years. With that many experience in teaching English classrooms, of course researcher is certain that the data that the researcher found will be valid to answer all the question that this research have. This research used Qualitative research as a research design. To analyze the data, the researcher used data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying the conclusion. The data that the researcher took used observation in the classroom and interviewed the teacher to conclude the reason English teachers and English teacher educators used L1 in their English classrooms, compare the different uses of L1 in their English classroom, and finally, to understand what kind of bilingual the teacher and teacher educators are. From the analysis, it was found that the reason teachers used L1 in English classrooms was to discuss a specific subject, express their strong opinions, repeat it to make sure students understand what we said, to clarify the speech content for another person, to make sure student understood, easier to understand, this is the reason why teacher used L1 in English classrooms. Next is the differences of L1 use in English classrooms. The difference between English teachers and English teacher educators use L1 in their English classroom is the frequency of code use. The English teacher used more Bahasa Indonesia than English, whereas the English teacher educator was the opposite. This research can be used by teachers or teacher educators to make the bilingual classroom more interesting by understanding the reason teachers and teacher educators use their first language. Same as English teachers and teacher educators. The Future researcher can use this research as their relevant research to make the new research about bilingualism, code-switching, or code-mixing by using different perspectives.
