Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of the research is to analyze the types of idiomatic expression and to know the meaning of idiomatic expression found in Shawn Mendes’ song lyrics. This research was done by using qualitative research which focused on content or document analysis. The songs from Shawn Mendes Handwritten album were chosen as the data sources in this research. The researcher chose 5 songs entitled Stitches, Something Big, Air, A Little Too Much and Crazy. The data were collected by searching the lyrics, listening, noted and identified and classifying the data based on the types of idiomatic expression. After that, the analysis of the data included reading song lyrics carefully to understand the meaning and drawing conclusion. The data were analyzed by using theory by McCarthy and O’Dell. After analyzing the data, the result shows that found five types of idioms in song lyrics. They are 6 similes, 2 binomials, 1 proverb, 4 clichés and 7 fixed statements. The most of idiomatic expressions which used in some Shawn Mendes’s songs above is fixed statement. Keywords: Idiomatic Expression, types of Idiom, Song
