Abstract

ABSTRACT Eighth-grade students often face challenges in writing English, including low motivation, limited practice, and difficulties in constructing descriptive texts. To address these issues, the Swell Method, a preferred teaching strategy, can enhance students' interest in learning and support teachers in developing students' writing skills. This study aims to determine the impact of the Swell Method on the descriptive writing abilities of eighth-grade students at MTs Roudlotul Huda Purwosari Padang Ratu. A Quasi-Experimental Design was employed, with a population of 233 eighth-grade students selected through cluster random sampling. The sample comprised two classes: class VIII E as the experimental group and class VIII F as the control group, totaling 72 students. The Swell Method was applied in the experimental group, while the Direct Method was used in the control group. Data collection involved pre-tests and post-tests through writing assessments, and the data were analyzed using the Paired Sample T-test in SPSS. The results showed a significance value of Sig. = 0.001 with α = 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, as Sig. < α = 0.001 < 0.05. This finding confirms that the Swell Method significantly enhances students' ability to write descriptive texts in the eighth grade at MTs Roudlotul Huda Purwosari Padang Ratu in the 2023/2024 academic year. In conclusion, the Swell Method effectively stimulates students‟ ideas and creativity, particularly in writing descriptive texts.
