Abstract

ABSTRACT Cohesion is a language element that connects parts of a text to other sentences. It maintains consistency in semantic relationships between elements of discourse and serves as a system for expressing connections between text and context. Grammatical cohesion refers to how grammatical features create connections across sentence boundaries in a text. This research planned to figure out: 1) the types of grammatical cohesion in TED video entitled “Welcome to the World of Audio Computers | Jason Rugolo”, and 2) the use of grammatical cohesion in TED video entitled “Welcome to the World of Audio Computers | Jason Rugolo” Descriptive qualitative research design was used in this study, because the data of this research was script of “Welcome to the World of Audio Computers” TED Video by Jason Rugolo. There were 5 steps in collecting the data: firstly searching the video, then watching it several times, making the transcript, marking the word that were considered as grammatical cohesion, and finally checking the data, whether they were relevant or not. The result of this data analysis shows that the grammatical cohesion found in the TED video entitled “Welcome to the World of Audio Computers” by Jason Rugolo, are 486 data. The types that most frequently used is Reference, mainly the personal reference, then followed by demonstrative reference, and lastly comparative reference. Reference shows 339 data. The next frequent type is conjunction, with 133 data. The least used types are substitutions and ellipsis, with 13 and 1 data showed respectively.
