Abstract

ABSTRACT This thesis aims to identify the types of metaphors present in the novel Animal Farm and the strategies employed in the translation by Djokolelono. To reach the finding the researcher analyzed with Newmark‟s theories for type of metaphors and strategies translation. The research utilized a descriptive qualitative approach, categorized under library research, where primary source are novel Animal farm by George Orwell and translated by Djokolelono. The data consist of phrase that contained metaphors. The finding of this research reveal five types of metaphors in the novels. Dead metaphor are predominant, occurring 7 times, followed by stock/standard metaphors appearing 5 times, and both cliché and original each appearing twice. Regarding translation strategies, the most frequent approach involves replace the image in the source language with a standard image in the target language, employed 7 times throughout the translation of the novel. Followed with replace the image in the source language with a standard image in the target employed 5 times, transform a metaphor into meaning 3 times and last connected the metaphor and the meaning just a time.
