Abstract

ABSTRACT Translation plays a crucial role in communication, especially for non�English speakers, allowing them to understand foreign content. The rapid development of science has highlighted the importance of high�quality translation involving both source and target languages. According to Newmark, translation is a craft aimed at conveying the same message in another language. When translating movies, subtitles can pose unique challenges, especially with cultural terms. This research focuses on the cultural terms found in the movie "Ratatouille," exploring the strategies used in translating these terms. The objectives are to categorize the cultural terms in the film and describe the translation strategies applied. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this case study collects and analyzes data from the movie. Newmark's cultural language theory is used as a framework for analysis. The findings reveal that most cultural terms fall into the category of material culture, with 39 out of 70 terms (55.7%). Eleven translation strategies were identified, with the most common being the use of equivalence in the target language (25.7%) and the use of loan words (24.3%). Other strategies included translation by omission, paraphrasing, and cultural substitution. The study concludes that translating cultural terms in subtitles requires a nuanced understanding of both languages and cultures to ensure the message is accurately conveyed without confusing the audience. This research highlights the complexity and importance of cultural context in translation, emphasizing the need for skilled translators to bridge language and cultural gaps effectively.
