Abstract

ABSTRACT Adjacency pairs is an automatic structure of conversation or also can be interpreted as „sequences of conversation. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of adjacency pairs occur in the conversation on The Neighbors‟ Window short film and to analyze the response of conversation in Neighbors‟ Window movie whether it is preferred or misreferred. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. The data was taken from Short Movie “Neighbors‟ Window”. The data were collected by downloading The Neighbors‟ Window short film via Youtube, downloading the transcript from The Neighbors‟ Window short film, watching The Neighbors‟ Window short film several times carefully accompanied by reading the transcript, to make sure the transcript matches the film, analyzing the utterances that consist of adjacency pairs, interpreting the data based on research question and making conclusion. Research findings showed that there were 25 conversations which involved some types of adjacency pairs namely greeting-greeting, apology-minimization or refusal, question-answer, request-acceptance or refusal, offer-acceptance or refusal, assessment-agreement or disagreement, and assertion-agreement or disagreement. It means that there were 7 types of adjacency pairs found in the Neighbors' Window movie. There were 2 conversations preferred and 7 conversation misreferred for example the conversation between Alli and Jacob was preferred because Jacob answered with an agreement for the asseement by Alli.
