Abstract

ABSTRACT Magazine covers typically combined both verbal and visual elements to create an engaging and informative design. This research examined TIME magazine covers, focusing on the interplay between visual and verbal elements. Visual grammar analysis and intersemiotic complementarity were used to understand how these elements enhanced each other‟s meanings and represented the overall representational meaning. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis as the research design. Visual and verbal data were obtained from three covers of selected TIME magazine covers were accesed on the legal website of TIME. The visual data were examined using Kress and van Leeuwen's framework of representational meaning. This analysis was further enhanced by applying Cheong Generic Structure Potential to investigate the structure of the selected TIME magazine covers. Additionally, the intermodal relationships were analyzed through Royce concept of intersemiotic complementarity. The research found that narrative representations from three magazines were found and the numbers consisted of action process total 3 and circumtances 2. Conceptual representations of three magazines were found and the total number was classificational total 2, analytical total 1, symbolic total 2. Intersemiotic complements from three magazines were found and the number consisted of repetition total 2, synonymy total 3, meronymy total 3, hyponymy total 2. These relationships created a coherent narrative and concept, strengthened the message to be conveyed, and enriched the readers experience in understanding the visual and verbal context simultaneously. Keywords : Magazine Covers, Multimodal, Representational Meaning, Intersemiotic Complementary
