Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was about analyzing pronunciation error made by students at the tenth grade of SMK SMTI Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2023/2024 in the first semester. The objectives of the research were to know what are the pronunciation errors made by students, especially in monophthong sounds and what are the causes of pronunciation errors made by students. The research methodology of this research was a qualitative method. The subjects of this research were the students of tenth grade of SMK SMTI Bandar Lampung in the first semester. The sample of this research was 30 students of the tenth grade at KI 2 class who obtained using purposive sampling technique. In collecting the data, the students were given 36 words containing monophthong sounds short and long vowel (/ɑ:/, /ɪ:/, /u:/, /ɜ:/, /ɔ:/, /ɒ/, /ɪ/, /ʊ/, /e/, /æ/, /ʌ/,/ə/). Then the errors made by students were analysed based on the Linguistic Category Taxonomy according to Dulay's theory. Moreover, this research used observation to find out the causes of errors based on Brown’s theory. The results found that the students made 923 pronunciation errors in monophthong sounds for short and long vowels. The total of students made error in short vowel was 473 items error. Meanwhile, the total of error in long vowel was 450 items error. The students many made error such as replacing the correct sound intoincorrect sounds, and also adding other sounds that are not needed in pronunciation. The students also omitting the sounds that needed in pronunciation. From the causes of error, the results show that the most common cause of error was interlingual transfer. Besides interlingual transfer as a common cause of error, intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communication strategy were also identified as causes of error in pronunciation made by students.
