Abstract

ABSTRACT In communication process, not only uses one language to communicate but also two languages or even more. The diversity of language in society makes people able to communicate in more than one language. When they talk to other people, they will often switch and choose a language that the listener understands according to their situation and needs. This phenomenon is known as code switching. The aim of this study were to find out the types of code switching and the function of code switching used by Cinta Laura in podcast Puella ID channel. Descriptive qualitative method was applied in order to find out the result of data analysis. The data of this study are only utterance which contain code switching uttered by Cinta Laura. This research was analyzed using theory from Charlotte Hoffman to find out the types and the function of code switching. To see the dominant types and function of code switching, this research used percentage and counted it manually. The result of this research showed that ini the data, there were 59 data which consist of three types of code switching: Intra-sentential switching (46), Inter-sentential switching (11) and Tag switching (2). From that the most dominant types is intra-sentential switching. There were 59 data which consist of seven function of code switching: Talking about a particular topic (31), Quoting somebody else (0), Being emphatic about something (8), Interjection (3), Repetition used for clarification (3), Intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor (11), Expressing group identity (3).
