Abstract

ABSTRACT In a directive speech act, a directive action between the speaker and the listener can occur if the speaker asks the listener to do something that the speaker wants. Something the speaker asks the listener must be understood in context and situation. The context is behind the emergence of a speech. Likewise, situations are needed in a speech. This research aims to analyze the directive speech acts used by all actors in the Onward movie. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data source used movies and scripts from the Onward movie. This research used the theories of Searle, Bach, and Harnish. This research aims to find out the types of directive speech acts and the reasons for directive speech acts. The findings of this research show that there are 120 directive speech acts in utterances found in the Onward movie. 120 utterances of directive speech acts in the Onward movie consist of types of commanding and reasons for requirements 62 data (51.67%), types of inviting 3 data (2.50%), types of forbidding and reasons for prohibitive 16 data (13.33%), types of requesting 25 data (20.83%) and reasons for requesting 28 data (23.3%), types of suggesting and reasons for advisories 13 data (10.83%), and types of permitting and reasons for permissive 2 data (1.67%). At the end of the research, it can be concluded that the utterances used by all actors in the Onward movie contain types and reasons for directive speech acts such as commanding, inviting, forbidding, requesting, suggesting, and permitting.
