Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF DEIXIS IN THE MAIN CHARACTER UTTERANCES IN “FRONT OF THE CLASS” MOVIE By DINA SUCIANA Deixis is a phenomenon that always occurs in our daily communication. Deixis, based on the technical term of the Greek word Deiktikos, means 'pointing' with language. Any linguistic form used to achieve this 'pointing' is called a deictic expression. When you notice an unfamiliar object and ask, 'What is that?', you are using the expression deixis (“that”) to indicate something in the immediate context. The objectives of this study was to identify the types of deixis and to find out the most dominant type of deixis in the utterances of the main character in “Front of the Class” movie. This study used qualitative research design and the approch used by the researcher is descriptive qualitative. Researchers analyzed data based on Levinson's theory. The results of this research show that in the main character's story in the "font of the class" movie there are 1021 deixis data which are divided into 5 types. The first is that there are 814 data which are categorized as person deixis. Second, there are 38 data that are categorized as time deixis. The third is that there are 25 data which are included in the category of place deixis. Fourth, there are 97 data which are categorized as social deixis. And finally there are 47 data which are included in the discourse deixis category. The most dominant type of deixis in the speech of the main character in the movie "Front of the Class" is the type of person deixis. Keywords: Deixis, Movie
