Abstract
ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF MODALITY IN THE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN'S INAUGURATION SPEECH By Aulia Febriana Harahap This research was about analysis of modality in the president Joe Biden‘s inauguration speech. Modality plays an important role in language as it helps the speaker to convey their attitudes, beliefs, and intentions towards the statements they make. The perspectives or personal opinions contained in Joe Biden's speech can prove the true meaning of modality based on modality categories. Modalities allow the speaker to influence the speaker's listeners. The speaker-listener relationship in communication will do well, as it plays a role in paying attention to the use of utterances and suggestions that are seen indirectly in constructing modalities. This research used qualitative method by using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics which focuses on Interpersonal Function. The aim of this research was to describe the types and to find out the meaning of modality in President Joe Biden's inauguration speech which took place on the west side of the capitol building in Washington D.C. on January 21,2021. According to the result of the research: The five types of modality with high, medium, and low degrees appear in the speech text. It can be concluded that Joe Biden's speech attempts to convey to the public about his and public's obligation, inclination, probability to do something, the possibility, and also the ability to make changes. This research expected could theoretically contribute to a better understanding of modality in speech or research paper and in those in the discipline of Applied Linguistics in particular, and practicaly this research expected contribute to the English Education Department by providing information related to types and function of modality in speaking also writing.
