Abstract

ABSTRACT A series is a part of a film that has consecutive stories and continues the story from the previous storyline. This makes the series a form of mass media that is able to reach a wider community. The Netflix series Avatar the Last Airbender tells the story of Aang's journey as a young Avatar, the Last Airbender. Aang's character as the main character in this film has an unusual attitude that is interesting to study. This research aims to determine the representation of Aang's character in the film. This research uses a qualitative descriptive research methodology, namely a social system that interprets behavior as a whole by observing. This research was analyzed using Rolland Barthes' semiotics, namely the relationship between signifier and signified. Denotation is the true meaning of a sign; connotation is the second stage in the content of a sign; and myth is an explanation and understanding of the reality that exists in society. The results of this research show that the denotational meaning in this series is the story of Aang facing the situation that occurred and his responsibility as Avatar; the connotation in this series is taking quick action to save many lives; and the myth contained in this series is the public's trust in the Avatar as a figure hero.
