Abstract

ABSTRACT A thesis entitled A Pragmatics Analysis of Deixis in the Song Lyrics of NIKI “Nicole” Album discusses the types of deixis used in the song lyrics. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of deixis and the dominant types of deixis in the song lyrics used by the songwriter. Nicole album consists of 12 songs those are Before, High school in Jakarta, Backburner, Keeping tabs, the Apartment we won‟t share, Facebook friends, Anaheim, Milk teeth, Autumn, Ocean & engines, On the drive home, and Take a chance with me. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method as research design and the data were collected by documentation method. This research used the deixis theory from George Yule. The data which is used is twelve songs of Nicole album and then classified into the types of deixis, which are person, spatial and temporal deixis. The results of this research shows that the type of deixis used in the song lyrics were deixis of person, spatial, and temporal. Person deixis consist of 770 deictic words or 88%, spatial deixis consist of 43 deictic words or 5%, and temporal deixis consist of 64 deictic words or 7%. Therefore, the dominant type of deixis in the song lyrics of Nicole album is person deixis. Keywords: Pragmatics, Deixis, Song Lyrics
