Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF COMPOUND WORDS IN THE “GREEN BOOK” MOVIE By: Muhammad Iqbal Andriantoro 1811040122 Compound words are formed when two or more words are combined to create a new word with a specific meaning. Compound words are viewed as a fundamental aspect of morphological structure, this process underscores the language's productivity and adaptability, as compounds can differ greatly in both meaning and form. The focus of the research was an analysis of compound words in the Green Book Movie. Then, the sub-focus of the research was the most dominant compound word. The researcher applied the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The main source of the data was taken from the movie which is entitled “Green Book” directed by Peter Farrelly on November 16th , 2018 based on the utterances of the main characters. The researcher used Data Condensation, Data Display, and Drawing Conclusions to analyze the data. Furthermore, the researcher utilized investigator and theoretical triangulation to ensure the validity of the data. The results of this research showed that 53 compound words were found in all the conversations of two main characters in the "Green Book” Movie based on Carstairs-Mccarthy’s theory. Based on the two research problems, there were 4 types of compound words; 33 compound nouns, 9 compound verbs, 4 compound adjectives, and 7 compound prepositions. Then, the researcher counted the percentage of each compound word that was found the most dominant. Compound verbs with a total of 16,9%, compound adjectives with a total of 7,6%, compound prepositions with a total of 13,3%, and the most dominant compound words were compound nouns with a total is 62,2%.
