Abstract

ABSTRACT In order to build an effective style of communication, it is necessary to get a complete grasp of the meaning of one's utterances or statements. Pragmatic competence is essential for effective communication since a lack of it can lead circumstances. The objective of the research were to find out and analyze the illocutionary acts and types of direct and indirect speech acts in Malala Yousafzai acceptance speech in the Nobel Prize awarding ceremony in Oslo, Norway. In the attempt of reaching those objectives, a descriptive qualitative research approach was conducted by obtaining the data from the transcript of the speech at The Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 2014 and the secondarydata from video of the Speech in Youtube. In addition, note taking and data sheet in form of tables were employed as the instrument of the research. The result of the research revealed that for illocutionary acts, assertive type is the most type that can be found in the speech with the total of 60.6% and directive type is the second most type that can be found in the speech with the total of 19.6%. Further, commissive type is the third most type that can be found in the speech with the total of 7.4% and expressive type is the fourth most type that can be found in the speech with the total of 6.6%. Additionally, declarative type is the least type that can be found in the speech with the total of 5.8%. In her speech Malala stated her gratitude towards all the support and help she got from surround her. Meanwhile, the most prominent types of direct speech act used in the speech was the directive type with the occurance of 103 or 83.63%, followed by interogative type of direct speech with 11 occurance or 9.01% and the imperative type of direct speech act as the least prominent type with the occurance of 5 or 4.09% and, the indirect speech acts were not too many employed in the speech, with only 4 accurance or 3.27% of directive type.
