Abstract

ABSTRACT Humor has been studied from different disciplinary viewpoints including philosophy, psychology, sociology, literature, rhetoric, linguistic and others by many scholars and experts. Thus, with the development of humor study, the linguistic perspective is becoming the mainstream of thoughts because it is more applicable and more systematic. In that case, to understand the pattern of communication in humor, the study of pragmatic is needed. Hence, through this research, the writer is interested in analyzing verbal humor that are produced by the characters of Family Guy (season 20) from the perspective of cognitive and communicative principle. In doing the analysis, the writer is applying descriptive qualitative method and using Sperber and Wilson’s Relevance Theory. Further, as the result of the research, after the writer selects five (5) episodes that are considered as the most of verbal humor produced by the characters of Family Guy, the writer finds twentyfive (25) scenes that are considered as verbal humor and can be analyzed using relevance theory. In the analysis, the writer also noticed that the form of verbal humor found in the Family Guy are commonly about people’s daily life and their environment, such as friendship, work/job, responsibility, culture and others. Further, in order to understand the verbal humor or joke in Family Guy, the audience/viewers must understand the contexts of the scene that appear in each of the episode, for instance, there are some lexical items uttered by the characters such as “Wall street”, “Stock Market”, “Lasik” and such, or later, the audience/viewers will never understand or recognized the humor that produced in a scene.
