Abstract

ABSTRACT The small group discussion technique is a learning process by conducting small group discussions whose goal is for students to have problem-solving skills related to the subject matter. This research aimed to find out influence of small group discussions technique towards students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text of the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Sungkai Jaya Lampung Utara in the academic year of 2023/2024. The method of this research was quasi-experimental. The population of this research was 115 students from 4 classes. The researcher used 2 classes as the sample of research. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument of this research was reading comprehension multiple choice test with 20 items test for pretest and 20 items test for posttest. The data collections of this research were pretest and posttest. The researcher used SPSS version 25 to count the data of research namely normality test, homogeneity test and hypothetical test. Based on the research finding, it was found that sig. (2-tailed) of the equal variance assumed in the independent sample test table where the sig. (2-tailed) obtained 0.000 It is lower than α = 0.05 and it means that Ha was accepted. The researcher concluded that there was significant influence of Small Group Discussion towards students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text of the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Sungkai Jaya Lampung Utara in the Academic Year of 2023/2024.
