Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to examine the levels of speaking anxiety and identify the contributing factors among third-semester students in the Speaking in Professional Context course at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the researcher selected 55 students from the English Department (classes A, B, C, and E). Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The analysis of the questionnaire responses categorized students into five anxiety levels: Very low anxiety, Moderately low anxiety, Moderate anxiety, Moderately high anxiety, and high anxiety. The results showed that 1 students were at a Very low anxiety level, 4 students were at a Moderately low anxiety level, 16 were Moderate anxiety, 26 were Moderately high anxiety, and 8 were very Moderately high anxiety. Following this, 6 students, representing both low and high anxiety levels, were interviewed to explore the causes of and solutions to speaking anxiety. The interviews revealed four primary factors contributing to students' anxiety: poor English skills, low self-esteem, fear of making mistakes and subsequent criticism (fear of negative evaluation), and worry about test day. Keyword: Factors of speaking anxiety, Levels of anxiety, Oral exam, Speaking anxiety.
