Abstract

ABSTRACT This research, titled "A Semiotic Analysis of Oppenheimer Movie Using Barthes’s Theory," explores the intricate use of symbols and signs within the film "Oppenheimer" through the lens of Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. Semiotic analysis, a qualitative method, aims to systematically decode symbols and signs within texts to uncover deeper meanings. The film, directed by Christopher Nolan, delves into the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, a pivotal figure in the development of the atomic bomb during World War II. The film "Oppenheimer" serves as a rich text for this analysis due to its historical significance, complex characters, and profound themes. This research examines the analysis of signs, namely denotation, connotation and myth in Oppenheimer movie. The study begins by contextualizing the importance of language as a system of symbols and the role of semiotics in understanding communication. Drawing from the works of linguists like Sapir and Halliday, it underscores the significance of studying signs to grasp the complexities of language and communication. This research aims to find signs in the movie. This study used qualitative descriptive methods to analyze the data obtained in this research. The primary data source in this research was taken from Oppenheimer movie. This study used time triangulation to validate the results of data analysis. First step is must to watched the movie to get accurate data. After the data was collected, and began to analyze each data in the form of conversations and images using Barthes's semiotic theory. Before the analysis stage, this study use tables to store denotative, connotative and mythical signs. From the results of this research are found verbal and non-verbal signs. Based on the result data analysis showed that the Oppenheimer Movie has positive message to reader about responsibility, ethical dilemmas, and the impact of technological advancements. Among the character of oppenheimer scene in this movie, 10 data were found which showed that sll findings highlight the theme of scientists' responsibility in developing new technology. Oppenheimer and his colleagues are aware of the moral consequences of their discoveries. Each analyzed scene shows the moral and ethical dilemmas faced by the scientists. Whether in discussions with Einstein, planning the bomb test, or Oppenheimer's personal reflections, ethical considerations are always present. Keyword : semiotic, Roland Barthes, Movie, oppenheimer
