Abstract
ABSTRACT Category shift itself is known as one of the strategies in translation that is related to the departures from formal correspondence in a translation and it consists of four kinds of shift, namely; structure shift, class shift, unit shift and intra-system shift. Here, since category shift is used to get an equivalence meaning, it has benefit in resulting a good and natural translation and equal from the source language. Thus, in this research, the objectives are to identify and describe category shift translation used in the English – Indonesian translation of Surah Al-Waqia in Holy Qur’an and also to find out the most dominant category shift applied in the Surah Al-Waqia by the translator and why it can be occurred. Further in order to do the research, the writer conducted descriptive qualitative method and applied category shift translation by Catford. In collecting the data, the writer written down all verses of Surah AlWaqia both version of English and Indonesian and then highlights the selected words from both version (English and Indonesian) on verses that are considered as category shift translation. As the result of the analysis, the writer found out that the total of category shift used in Surah Al Waqia is 38 data, which consist of Structure Shift (12 data), class shift (4 data), Unit Shift (15 data) and Intra-System Shift (7 data). Thus, from the findings, it can be said that the most dominant category shift found in the translation of English – Indonesian of Surah Al Waqia in Holy Qur’an is Unit Shift, followed by structure shift, Intra-System Shift and lastly, class shift. Furthermore, the writer also noticed that category shift translation occurred because of two main reasons; they are formal correspondence and textual equivalent. Formal correspondence refers to the similarity in linguistic forms, which means that in the process of translation, the translator needs to carefully adding or omitting the texts from source language (SL) to target language (TL). Meanwhile textual equivalent refers to both grammatical and lexical levels, which means that in doing the translation process, the translator needs to pay iii attention in arranging the texts (related to the grammar) from source language into the target language.
