Abstract

ABSTRACT There are many obstacles faced by students in the process of learning English. One of the obstacles that occur to students in learning English is speaking. Speaking of the students at SMPN 12 Krui Pesisir Barat is still very low and needs to be improved. Therefore, the researcher wants to use the Pictionary game to improve and develop students' Speaking Abilities. Pictionary game is one of the fun techniques to make the students more interested in study activities which can be applied by the teacher in the classroom where the students build their creative thinking based on their drawing by describing the picture, therefore it makes students increase their speaking ability. The objective of this research was to determine whether there is a significant influence of using the Pictionary game towards students' speaking ability at the first semester in eighth-grade students of SMPN 12 Krui Pesisir Barat in the academic year 2022/2023. The research was conducted using a quasi-experimental design. The population in this research was the eighth grade of SMPN 12 Krui Pesisir Barat. The samples used were two classes for the experimental class and the control class, VIII A and VIII B which consisted of 29 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used an instrument in the form of an oral test of 40 pictures after validity. After giving the pre-test and post-test, the researcher analyzed the normality and homogeneous distribution data using SPSS v.28 to calculate the independent sample t-test. Based on the data analysis calculated using SPSS v.28, it was obtained that Sig. (2-tailed) of the equal variance assumed was 0.004 and α = 0.05. Ha is accepted if Sig. < α = 005 and Ho is accepted if Sig > α= 0.05. It means that, Sig. 0.004 < α = 0.05. So, Ha accepted. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is a significant influence in the use of Pictionary game towards students’ speaking ability at the first semester in the eighth-grade students of SMPN 12 Krui Pesisir Barat in The academic year 2022/2023.
