Abstract

ABSTRACT This research focused on the correlation between students‟ vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability. The objective of this research was to know whether there was correlation between students‟ vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability at the second semester of the eleventh grade of SMAN 17 Bandar Lampung in the academic year of 2019/2020. In this research correlational research was quantitative research. The population of this research was eleventh grade students of SMAN 17 Bandar Lampung. The sample of the research was gained through cluster random sampling, 35 students in IPA 1 as the sample. In collecting the data of the research used objective test that were multiple choices consisted 20 items and speech for speaking test. In this research, SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science) was used to compute Pearson Product Moment‟s formula for hypothetical of testing. After doing the hypothetical testing, the result demonstrated that there was a positive correlation between students‟ vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability. Based on the data analysis computed by SPSS, it was obtained that Sig (P value) = 0.000 and α = 0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and H0 was rejected because Sig (P value) = 0.000 < α = 0.05. Therefore, there was a significant correlation between students‟ vocabulary mastery and their speaking ability at the second semester of the eleventh grade at the SMAN 17 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2019/2020.
