Abstract

Writing is one of English skills that must be mastered by the students. Based on the preliminary research in SMA Hidayatul Muslihin Way Kanan, most of the students, 40 students (65.58%) got lower than 70. Criteria of minimum mastery (KKM) in SMA Hidayatul Muslihin Way Kanan is 70. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is significant influence of using small group discussion towards students’ descriptive text writing ability at the first semester of the tenth grade of SMA Hidayatul Muslihin Way Kanan in the academic year of 2016/2017. In this research, the writer used quasi-experimental research design. The population of this research was the students of SMA Hidayatul Muslihin Way Kanan at the tenth grade. The writer chose the sample randomly by using cluster random sampling technique. The writer used small group discussion in experimental class as a treatment and lecture method in control class. In collecting the data, the writer used instrument in written form. The instrument was used for pre-test and post-test. Before analyzing the data, the writer did test for normality and homogeneity to know whether the data had normal distribution and the variance of the data was homogenous or not. The result was the data had normal distribution and the variance of the data was homogenous. Therefore, to analyzing the data, the writer used independent sample t-test. After analyzing the data using independent sample t-test, it was found that the result of t-test was 2.50, the result then it was consulted to the score of t-critical in significance level of 0.05 was 1.68. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Therefore, there is a significant influence of using small group discussion towards’ students descriptive text writing ability at the first semester of the tenth grade of SMA Hidayatul Muslihin Way Kanan in the academic year of 2016/2017.
