Abstract

In learning English, the students still found difficulties in reading, especially in understanding and getting information of the text. There were also faced by the students of the eighth grade of MTs GUPPI 3 Belanga, South Lampung. To solve that problem, the researcher applied PORPE strategy. Through the application PORPE strategy for teaching reading comprehension, the students can find information from the text quickly. The objective of this research was to know whether there was a significant influence of using PORPE strategy toward students’ descriptive text reading comprehension. The design of this research was quasi experimental design. The population was the students eighth grade of MTs. The samples were 62 students taken from eighth grade of which was chosen through random sampling technique. The samples of this research were two classes consisting of 30 students for experimental class and 32 students for control class. In the experimental class, PORPE strategy was used and in control class guided reading strategy was used. The treatments were held in 3 meetings in which 2 x 40 minutes for each class. In collecting the data, were administred pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed using SPSS of version 16 to calculate Hypothetical test of Mann Whitney U test, because the data in control class were not in a normal distribution. So, the result showed that Asymp Sig = 0.001 and α = 0.05. It revealed that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted because Sig < α = 0.001 < 0.05. In the other words, there was a significant influence of using PORPE strategy towards students’ descriptive text reading comprehension.
