Abstract

ABSTRACT The relationship between society, gender and language is complex and interrelated. Language is not only a means of communication, but also reflects the structure and values in society. Gender plays a role in the way language is used, both in the form of words used and in the social norms that govern their use. Women's language features are the language features used by women in stereotyped societies. The objective of this research was to find out what features of women's language and language functions were used by the March Sisters in the little women movie. This study used a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data and describe the results. The data source was collected from Little women's script. Documentation method was used for data collection and used human instrument as research instrument. The researcher collected data through steps by watching the Little Women movie; listening the sentences or conversations that contain women's language features in movie script; identified and marks out the word that contain women's language features in data. The researcher analyzed the data by identified and categorized the women's language features in Little Women movie. The results showed that not all types of women's language features were used by the March sisters in the story script or film. There were a total of 113 utterances from 9 types of women's language features found in Little Women: 20 lexical hedges or fillers, 6 tag questions, 23 rising intonations, 2 empty adjectives, one specific color term, 52 intensifiers, 5 hypercorrect grammar, 5 superpolite forms, and 26 empathic stress. Best on the number of dominant types of women's language used in Little Women, intensifiers were selected. The types of room language function used in Little Women were: referential function, expressive function, social function, and directive function.
