Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the type of speech functions that find by the characters of Moana and Maui in the "Moana" Movie that refers to Holmes‟s theory. It is aimed to describe the type of speech function used by Moana and Maui, to find out the most dominant type used by Moana and Maui in the "Moana" Movie that refers to Holmes‟s theory. The research of this thesis was carried by using descriptive qualitative. Investigator triangulation used in this research to check the validation of the data. The source of the data referred to the kind of intrinsic elements that used in the research. The data checked by asking the expert. In this research, the researcher readied the script carefully and classifies the utterances produced by Moana and Maui Characters. Data collection in this study used the reading technique, data in the form of script movies were classified based on the speech function. There are expressive, directive, referential, metalinguistic, poetic and phatic. From Moana and Maui who observed, the researcher found different total utterances and percentage. The total utterance of Moana and Maui is 225 utterances which classified into five types of speech function. The most dominant type used by Moana and Maui is referential function. There are 108 utterances of 225 utterances (48%) belong to referential function. The reason why they use speech function differently is because each type of speech function has different function which should adjust to different condition and situation in the dialogue.
