Abstract

ABSTRACT Meaning is the intention conveyed by the speaker. Meaning used to deliver information which can understood together. There are several types of meaning, namely the conceptual meaning and the connotation meaning. Connotation meaning is usually found in literary works, connotation meaning is subjective depending on the culture or experience of a person or group. This research focuses on the analysis of the connotative meaning contained in the “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” movie by using J.N. Hook theory. This research aims to find out : the types of connotative meaning in the “Shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings” movie and describe the implicit situational meaning contained in the “Shang-chi and the legend of the ten rings” movie. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research, which applied a content analysis method. The researcher collected data through steps by watching the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie; listening the sentences or conversations that contain the connotative meaning in movie script; identified and marks out the word that contain the connotative meaning in data. The researcher analyzed the data by identified and categorized the connotative meaning in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie. The result of this research were the researcher found that there are three types of connotative meaning based on J.N. Hook Theory namely positive, negative and neutral connotation in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings movie. There are 37 sentence that contain connotative meanings including 11 positive connotations, 15 neutral connotations and 11 negative connotations. Neutral connotation is most widely used in the script of the movie to replace the actual meaning to make it more interesting and easier to understand. From this analysis, the researcher found the implicit situational meanings in this movie is this movie tells of legends in ancient times thousands of years before today, then refers to 1996 and finally refers to the present. Selected location America, and then fantasy village. The relationship that occurs refers to the family. And the cultural background taken is China.
