Abstract

ABSTRACT Culture is the formation of norms, behavior, beliefs, customs, and values owned by a group or region. It also refers to specific characteristics such as language, religion, ethnic and racial identity, history, and cultural traditions. Culture is one of the difficulties that translators usually encounter when translating. Therefore a specific translation process is needed to make it easier and right. Translation procedures are the steps used by translators in solving translation problems. In other words, the translation procedure is essential in realizing equivalence between the source and target languages. This study aims to find the material culture in Lelaki Harimau English version novel by Eka Kurniawa and to analyze the types of translation procedures used in translating the material culture word in Lelaki Harimau English version novel by Eka Kurniawan. This research is content analysis. Data analysis using data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The data is in the form of words or phrases that contain the material culture word. In collecting data, the researcher used tables to present the data found in Lelaki Harimau English version novel by Eka Kurniawa using the word culture under Newmark's theory and then analyzed the words with the translation procedure proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. The data analysis found that six of the seven translation procedures proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet were applied to translate the 37 words of material culture found in the Lelaki Harimau novel. The most often used is the transposition procedure, there are twelve material culture words. Follow it the adaptation with ten material culture words, and borrowing procedures with five material culture words, and four for modulation. Next are three material culture words for both calque and literal,and the last is procedures that are not implemented at all, equivalence. Keywords: Culture, Novel, Translation
