Abstract
ABSTRACT There was a time when a speaker and an interlocutor desired to express implicit meanings that were different from what was said, but they did not wish to cooperate during the communication process. The researcher focused on analyzing the flouting maxims those were flouting the maxim of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. This research descriptive used qualitative methods. The analysis particularly discusses the flouting of the maxim in the utterances, which are described in four types. The data of this research are the Instagram followers' comments on Adele's caption. The researcher used Data Condensation, Data Display, and Concluding to analyze the data. Furthermore, the researcher utilized investigator and theoretical triangulation to ensure the validity of the data The findings show that comments are flouting of maxim on Adele‟s captions. The most dominant was flouting the maxim of quantity. It flouted times or %. The maxim of quality was flouted times or % of the time. The maxim of relevance was flouted times or % of the time. The maxim of manner was flouted times or % of the time. The result of the research shows that the Followers‟ comments on Adele‟s Instagram perform all types of flouting maxims. Flouting a maxim can be used to criticize someone or something indirectly. Speakers may flout a maxim to produce a negative pragmatic effect, such as sarcasm or irony.
