Abstract

ABSTRACT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING POP UP CARD MEDIA TOWARDS STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 2 GADINGREJO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2020/2021 By KRISTIANINGSIH Pop-up card is the media card it is used to the students in the teaching and learning process in the classroom. Many students struggle with learning English during the teaching and learning process in the classroom. To overcome this limitation the researcher employed a pop-up card as a medium to improve students' speaking abilities. The objective of this research is to determine the effectiveness of using pop-up card media on students' speaking abilities in the first semester of eighth grade at SMPN 2 Gadingrejo in the academic year 2020/2021. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design in this study, with two classes: an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class was taught with pop-up cards, while the control class was taught with textbooks. The same pre-test and post-test were given to each class. The researcher used an oral test to collect data for the study. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Gadingrejo. The samples of this research were two classes consisted of 62 students of VIII 1 there are 30 students in experimental class and VIII 2 there are 32 students in control class. The data was analyzed by the researcher using an independent sample t-test, which revealed that there was an effectiveness of iii using pop up card media towards students' speaking ability at SMP N 2 Gadingrejo in the academic year of 2020/2021. From the data analysis computed by using SPSS, it was obtained that Sig = 0.000 and α = 0.05. It means Ha is accepted because Sig 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, there was an effectiveness of using pop up card media towards students speaking ability at the first semester of the eighth grade of SMPN 2 Gadingrejo in the academic year of 2020/2021. The result also suggested that pop up card media can be employed as the alternative technique in teaching speaking skill. Keywords: Pop up card media, Speaking ability, Experimental research.
