Abstract

ABSTRACT Ability to understand concept and students’ critical thinking skills in learning mathematics is an ability needed by students as a support in solving mathematical problems. Based on the results of daily tests for mathematics subjects, the ability to understand concepts and critical thinking skills of students at SMP Negeri 8 Mesuji is still low. From the students’ process of solving mathematical problems, there are still many students who do not pay attention to the explanations given by the teacher so that students are not able to solve mathematical problems, well. In overcoming these problems, researchers apply the ICM model. The purpose of this study was do determine the effect of the ICM model and the direct learning model on students’ conceptual understanding and critical thinking abilities. This research is a quasy experiment. The sampling technique used cluster random sampling technique. The sample in this study were students of class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class. The instrument used to collect data is a description test. The data analysis technique used is the normality test, homogeneity test and hypotesis testing using the MANOVA test. Based on the results of the MANOVA test, the values obtained from Pillai’s, Wilks Lambda, Hotelling’s Trace, Roy’s Largest Root = 0.000 and the test criterion value, so that H₀ is rejected, thus it can be concluded that there is an influence of the ICM Model on Students Concept Understanding Ability and Critical Thinking Ability. Keywords : ICM, Concept Understanding Ability, Critical Thinking Ability. iv ABSTRAK Kemampuan Pemahaman Konsep dan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa dalam pembelajaran matematika merupakan suatu kemampuan yang diperlukan oleh siswa sebagai penunjang dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan matematika. Berdasarkan hasil ulangan harian mata pelajaran matematika bahwa kemampuan pemahaman konsep dan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa di SMP Negeri 8 Mesuji masih rendah, dilihat dari proses siswa dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan matematika masih banyak siswa yang tidak memperhatikan penjelasan yang disampaikan oleh guru sehingga siswa belum mampu menyelesaikan masalah matematika dengan baik. Dalam mengatasi masalah tersebut, peneliti menerapkan Model ICM. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh antara model ICM dan model pembelajaran langsung terhadap kemampuan pemahaman konsep dan kemampuan berpikir kritis siswa. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian Quasy Experiment. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik cluster random sampling. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII A sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas VIII B sebagai kelas kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah berupa tes uraian. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan yaitu uji normalitas, uji homogenitas dan uji hipotesis menggunakan uji MANOVA. Berdasarkan hasil uji MANOVA diperoleh nilai dari Pillai’s, Wilks’ Lambda, Hotelling’s Trace, Roy’s Largest Root = 0,000 dan nilai kriteria uji, sehingga H₀ ditolak dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh Model ICM Terhadap Kemampuan Pemahaman Konsep dan Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis Siswa.
