Abstract

ABSTRACT Critical discourse analysis is a form of discourse analysis research that primarily examines how abuses of social power, domination, and inequality are coerced, reproduced, and denied through texts and language in social and political contexts. Early in the year 2022, word of Russia's invasion of Ukraine flooded the world's media. Regarding this issue, the media can also influence how information is disseminated to the public. TASS media actively repoterted the news and got a lot of attention from their text. The aims of this study is to know the textual structure, social cognition, and social context of three TASS media news on the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The research method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method by Van Dijk‘s elements theory as the instrument. The data sources for this study are the text editorial of Tass Russia New Agency Media and books, journals, articles and some research on the research topic. Research findings of this study can be seen from the 3 elements of analysis that have been carried out by researcher, that TASS media tends to provide personal opinion by bringing down Ukraine through words and the depiction of figures and characters in the news. Then, there are several opposing reports showing a different opinion. The researcher hopes that this research will aid readers who wish to know the evolution and structure of the news regarding Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Every media outlet has its own reason for publishing news, and readers should be more skeptical of what they read. The suggestion for the next researcher should think about what the text or object they will choose because it will have a large influence, and for English teacher should use critical discourse analysis in order to allowing them to be more critical in all aspects of their lives.
