Abstract

ABSTRACT It should be realized that reading is an activity that is very beneficial for everyone. In the world of education, making reading activities one of the habits of students is the hope for all parents and teaching staff at schools. The role of the teacher is very important in developing students' interest in reading. Teachers who are able to play a good role will produce students who have a high interest in reading. According to Mulyasa, teachers play a very important role in helping the development of students to realize their life goals optimally. Interests, talents, abilities, and potentials possessed by students will not develop optimally without the help of the teacher. Based on the results of the pre-research, it showed that students' interest in reading was still low, so researchers wanted to find out what the teacher's role was in developing students' interest in reading. This study was conducted using a qualitative descriptive research method involving classroom teachers and fourth grade students in elementary school 4 Gedong Air, data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation as a complement. Examination of data using triangulation. Then the data were analyzed using the steps of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This study aims to describe the teacher's role in developing reading interest fourth grade students in elementary school 4 Gedong Air. The results of this study indicate the teacher's role in developing interest in reading in students. The results showed that the teacher's role in developing interest in reading fourth grade students in elementary school 4 Gedong Air, explanation: 1) Teacher, familiarizes students with reading in every class meeting, creates a fun, effective, and conducive learning atmosphere but the teacher is not strict in treating students, 2) Supervisor, the teacher understands the character of students whose interest in reading is good or still low, teacher provide guidance and advice to students but are only given advice without strict treatment to follow up on students who are still lacking in interest in reading,3) Counselors, teachers give positive encouragement to students so they can like reading activities, teachers can analyze the motives behind students' low interest in reading, 4) Evaluators, teachers know the problems and progress on the development of students' interest in reading and carry out an evaluation fair so as to show interest in reading students as they are,5) Model/Example, the teacher sets a good example/example for students in developing students' interest in reading and can be a source of inspiration, 6) Creativity Booster, the teacher creates something new or innovation that always finds better ways in serving students and not doing something that is routinely monotonous can help students to develop interest in reading and try to find something better way to develop interest in reading students Keyword: Teacher’s Role, Interest In Reading
