Abstract

ABSTRACT Speaking, along with listening, writing, and reading is one of the four fundamental abilities in learning English. Speaking is an activity that is done orally and can be used as a communication tool between two or more parties, also speaking is a part of daily life. Speaking also is an element of society since it allows us to communicate information to a listener while also developing and sharing the meaning. Speaking is one of the skills that students in senior high school should master. Students should speak in order to actively participate in speaking class. Although, in the fact, there were many students who have difficulty speaking English which was caused by several factors such as difficulty memorizing vocabulary, and difficulty using good pronunciation which makes them not confident to speak English. In this research, the quantitative research method and quasi�experimental design was used. The researcher used instruments in the form of research with pre-test and post-test to collect data. The research sample consisted of two classes: 30 students for the experimental class and 33 students for the control class. The treatments were delivered in 2 x 45 sessions. The population of this research was the twelfth grade. After administering the pretest and posttest, the researcher used SPSS to compute the independent sample t-test to determine whether the data was normal and homogeneous. According to the data analysis computed with SPSS, the value of significant generated Sig. (Pvalue) = 0.000 = 0.05. That was, Ha was accepted meanwhile Ho was rejected. Furthermore, the students had gotten the solution in improving English especially speaking through TED Talk video as the media in learning. Based on the results, it was possible to conclude that there was a significant in the effectiveness of using Ted Talk video toward students’ speaking ability at twelfth grade of the first semester of MAN 1 Lampung Tengah in the Academic year 2022/2023.
