Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ANALYSIS OF THE DIFFICULTIES IN ONLINE LEARNING ON STUDENTS’ PRONUNCIATION MASTERY AT MASTER ENGLISH COURSE By Anisa Ulmut Mainah 1811040290 The effectiveness of online learning is influenced by many factors. Several factors created barriers to online learning, such as administrative, social, interaction, academic skills, technical skills, student motivation, time and support for the study, technical issues, costs, and internet access. There are many problems and difficulties in learning English through the online method. Therefore, this research aimed to obtain the information and then analyzed the students’ difficulties in online learning on students’ pronunciation mastery. This research used qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The population was all intermediate students in the master English course, consisting of 25 students as a sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used three major phrases of data analysis, they were; data condensation, data display, and conclusion. The result revealed that the students had difficulty in online learning, the difficulties included: First, students got some difficulties in online learning that were; the students felt difficulty managing their time during the only class and worried that they cannot serious in the learning process, they had difficulties to make interaction with the tutor and other students. They felt difficult to focus when studying at home because not support the environment and the last sometimes the students get poor connections in an online classes. So that affected students understanding of the material. Second, the causes of students’ difficulties in online learning are the students did not get a good instructor skillful in figuring out some issues from students. They were difficult to understand the material presented and felt not an appropriate strategy was used, the students felt a lack of motivation in participating in learning because not support the drilling strategy and that cause made student not interested join online learning. The implementation of this research is; for students, can apply to pronounce a good word in their daily conversation and practice every time, where ever, and whenever. Instructors should keep making good way and appropriate strategies in online learning activities. For the next researcher, they can conduct a study about the difficulties in online learning and the causes, adding a strategy or solution to solve the problem in online learning. And the last for the course is to keep motivating students and create a comfortable online class for them to enjoy online learning in pronunciation class.
