Abstract

ABSTRACT Among the four skills of English, speaking has been the major problem faced by the learners. This research was conducted in the attempt to find out the the eighth grade students of SMPN 16 Bandar Lampung speaking ability in telling daily activities. In order to reach that objective, the quantitative descriptive analysis research design was applied, involving twenty-eight students as the research sample. The speaking test of telling daily activity was the instruments of the research given to the participants. The data then was analyzed through the steps of scoring the students tests result based on the speaking rubric. The result of the analysis revealed that 35% of the students belonged to the excellent criteria. Meanwhile 14% of them belonged to good criteria. Further 21% and 28% belonged to the adequate and unacceptable criteria, respectively. In addition, the result of the test was also analyzed to determine the students’ speaking ability based on the five aspects of speaking; comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and fluency. Based on the findings of the research, several conclusions can be drawn regarding the analysis of the students’ ability in telling daily activities; First, the eighth grade students’ of SMPN 16 Bandar Lampung speaking ability in telling daily activity belonged to the excellent, good, adequate and unacceptable category. Second, the speaking aspects that most of the students gained high score were comprehension, vocabulary and pronunciation. Third, the speaking aspects that most of the students gained low score were grammar and fluency. Keyword: Students Speaking Ability, Telling Daily Activities, Descriptive Quantitative
