Abstract

ABSTRACT AN ERROR ANALYSIS IN USING PRESENT PARTICIPLE IN THE STUDENTS’ PARAGRAPH WRITING AT THE SECOND SEMESTER OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM STKIP MUHAMMADIYAH KOTABUMI IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2018/2019 By Maiza Samsul Huda Grammar is the study of combining the words into sentences properly. Harmer defined that grammar as the description of the way in which word can change their form and can be combined into sentence in that language. The present participle is one of the most important component that students should understand. Present participle has fuction as an adjective. It is formed by adding –ing to the base verb form. It is not a verb, but it has the fuction as an adjective. The research methodology of this research was descriptive qualitative. The population of the research was taken from the students at the second semester of English Education Study Program of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi in the academic year of 2018/2019 consisted of 51 students. In taking the sample of the research, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The sample was class B consisting of students. In collecting the data, the researcher used documentation. The source of analyzing the data in this study through documentation was taken from the students‘ writing that were written by the second semester students of English Education Study Program of STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi in the academic year of 2018/2019. The result of data analysis showed that error on the omission of verb/be was 11 items. It was followed by the errors on applying -ing was 8 items, and double verb error was 6 items. And the result of data error source analysis showed that source on interlingual was 6 items, and intralingual 20 items. In brief, the highest error made by the second semester students of English Department at STKIP Muhammadiyah Kotabumi dealing with present participle was on Omission of verb/be. And most of the error sources made by students was from Intralingual. Keywords: Grammar, Present Participle, Error Analysis
