Abstract

TEACHING AND LEARNING SPEAKING BY USING DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE ABSTRACT By VENI DWI PUTRI The objectives of this research were to know the process of teaching speaking by using discussion technique and the teachers‟ problems in teaching students‟ speaking ability through discussion technique at the second semester of the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Belalau in academic year 2022/2023. The researcher was not giving any treatment for this research. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative research. There was one class as the sample of research consisted of 29 students. The instruments of this research were observation sheet, interview sheet and documentation. The researcher observed the process of teaching learning and analyzing the data namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The research findings showed that teaching learning processes in the class were quite running well. It could be seen that the teacher applied all of the steps teaching by using discussion technique, but there were some weaknesses in several sides and there were some problems faced by teacher and students. In other hand the classroom atmosphere in teaching and learning speaking through discussion technique are the students looked achieve in learning speaking through discussion technique, but some of them looked less responsive in learning speaking through discussion technique and still feel shy to start speaking. The teachers‟ problem in teaching speaking through discussion technique are: the class and time management because the students make a noisy in the class. And the teacher had problem to give a meaningful feedback or reflection for the students in the process of teaching speaking through discussion technique.
