Abstract

ABSTRACT THE INFLUENCE OF USING DIRECTED READING THINKING ACTIVITY (DRTA) TOWARDS STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION IN REPORT TEXT AT THE SECOND SEMESTER OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE AT MA GUPPI BANJIT IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2021/ 2022 By DWI RANI ANITA SARI Reading is one of language skills that should be mastered by students. In reading process the readers will find the knowledge and get information from printed text. The students‟ reading comprehension in MA Guppi Banjit is still low especially in reading report text. It can be seen from the students’ reading score in preliminary research. There were 53,7% of the students who got the score under 70 as the criteria of minimum mastery. To solve the problem, the researcher applied Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy. Directed Reading Thinking Activity is a strategy that intended to develop students’ ability to read critically and reflectively, determine the purposes of reading, the ability to extract, comprehend, and assimilate information, the ability to make predictions to examine reading materials based on the purposes of reading, the ability to pass judgments, and finally the ability to make decisions based upon information gleaned from reading. The objective of this research is to know whether there is significant influence of using DRTA strategy towards students‟ reading comprehension on report text at the second semester of the eleventh grade at MA Guppi Banjit in the academic year of 2021/ 2022. The research methodology was quasi experimental design. In this research, the population was the eleventh grade of MA Guppi Banjit. The Sample of the research was two classes consisting 34 students for experimental class and 39 students for control class. In the experimental class, the researcher was used DRTA Strategy and in the control class the researcher used Reading aloud. The treatments were held in 3 meetings for each class. In collecting data, the researcher used instrument in the form multiple choice question which had been tried out before the treatment. The instrument was given in pre-test and post-test. Before giving the treatment, the researcher gave pre-test for both classes. Then, after conducting the treatment, the instrument was given in post-test. After giving pre-test and post-test, the researcher analyzed the data using SPSS to compute independent sample t-test. From the data analysis computed by using SPSS, it was obtained that Sig. = 0.00 and α = 0.05. It means Ha is accepted because Sig. < 0.05. Therefore, there is a significant influence of using DRTA strategy towards students’ reading comprehension on report text at the Second semester of the eleventh grade of MA Guppi Banjit..
