Abstract

THE ANALYSIS OF FLOUTING MAXIM IN THE ELLEN TALKSHOW WITH THE GUEST-STAR TAYLOR SWIFT ABSTRACT By HASNA AZIZAH Conversation is the common form of communication in daily life. Conversation is defined as the familiar kind of talk in which two or more people freely alternate in speaking. There are rules in conversation namely maxim. Maxim is divided into four types namely quantity, quality, relation, and manner. The researcher analyzed these types of maxims and the implied meaning in the utterance that flouted the maxims, especially in a Talk Show. The objectives of this research were to analyze types of maxims are flouted in the Ellen Talkshow and the implied meaning of utterance that are flouted in the Ellen Talkshow with the guess-star Taylor Swift. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. The instrument was the researcher herself who analyzed a Talk Show. The data were analyzed by editing (converting the video into written transcript), coding, classification, tabulation, and interpretation. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were 20 utterances in the Ellen Talkshow that indicated flouting the maxim quantity, quality, relevant and manner. There were five utterances that flouted the maxim of quantity, six utterances that flouted the maxim of quality, four utterance that flouted the maxim of relevant and six utterance that flouted the maxim of manner. The implied meaning of the flouting maxim can be just for a joke, describing another point of view, informing something, etc. It is important for the people to build good communication by not saying irrelevant sentences.
