Abstract

ABSTRACT The students of English subject in the first semester of the eighth grade of SMP Wiratama Mandala Ulubelu were supposed to be able in reading text well. Therefore this research was intended to analyze the students reading comprehension in analytical exposition text. Moreover, the objectives of this research were to find out how was students’ ability in reading comprehension of analytical exposition in the English learning process and to find out students’ problems in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. This research used Descriptive Qualitative Research. The subject of this research was 37 students and one English teacher of the first semester of the eighth grade of SMP Wiratama Mandala Ulubelu. In collecting the data, this research used students' results of students' multiple-choice tests, interview the teacher and give questionnaires for the students. After collecting the data, the data had been analyzed to know students' ability in reading comprehension of analytical exposition in the English learning process and to find out students’ problems in reading comprehension of analytical exposition text. From the data analysis, it was found that the students’ reading comprehension in reading analytical exposition was poor to the average level. It could be seen from the mean score of the students, among 37 students, there were only 4 students (10%) was in good to an excellent level, 16 students (40%) in average to a good level, 20 students (50%) were in poor to the average level, 0 students (0%) were in poor level. It could be concluded that more than half of the students had a poor average level. Most of the components were at the same level of comprehension. Then, the components, were inferences, main idea, supporting the idea, and vocabulary were on average to a good level. It happened because of many reasons: their mother tongue and not yet accustomed to language English, pronunciation and meaning the words.
