Abstract

ABSTRACT In studying foreign language, writing is one of language skills that should be mastered by the students. The students' writing ability of SMP Negeri 2 Abung Tengah North Lampung have a problem in writing, especially in writing recount text. Therefore, the researcher applied RAFT Strategy, in learning writing at SMP Negeri 2 Abung Tengah North Lampung. RAFT strategy is acronym of Role, Audience, Format, Topic. This strategy is a system to help students understand their role as a writer. The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant influence of using RAFT strategy towards students' ability in writing recount text at the second semester of the eighth grades of SMP Negeri 2 Abung Tengah North Lampung in the academic year of 2019/2020. The method used in this research was quasi-experimental design. The sample was taken from two classes in control and experimental class. In determining the sample of research, the researcher used cluster random sampling. The researcher used RAFT strategy for experimental class as a treatment, and translation strategy for control class. The population of this research was the eighth grades students of SMP Negeri 2 Abung Tengah North Lampung. In collecting the data, the researcher used writing recount text test. The researcher analyzed the data by using independent sample t-test. Based on the data analysis, it was obtained that sig = 0.000 and α = 0.05. It means that Ha is accepted Ho is rejected because sig < α = 0.05. In other words, it could be concluded that there was influence of using RAFT strategy towards students’ ability in writing recount text at the second semester of the eighth grades of SMP Negeri 2 Abung Tengah North Lampung in the academic year of 2019/2020.
