Abstract

ABSTRACT THE INFLUENCE OF SUMMARIZING STRATEGY TOWARDS STUDENTS' READING COMPREHENSION IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE FIRST SEMESTER OF THE GRADE EIGHTH OF SMP WIRATAMA MANDALA ULUBELU IN ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2020/2021 By Albert Domersi 1411040210 Reading is a way people write. Learn to write from reading. This means they can rewrite what they have read after reading. Students can apply their ideas to reading activities in written form. If the student does not read enough, it is impossible to learn English.In order to solve this problem, the writer used Summarizing Strategy. The summary strategy is to ask questions and name the object. Then, in this study, the goal is to use summary strategies to have a significant impact on students' reading comprehension in the first semester of the seventh grade of SMP Wiratama Mandala Ulubelu in the 2020/2021 academic year. The method of this research was quasi-experimental design. The population for this study is the 8th grade of SMP Wiratama Mandala Ulubelu. The samples of this study are selected by cluster random sampling technique. The sample includes two categories, one is the experimental class, and the other is the control class. The treatment was conducted in three sessions of 2x45 minutes per session. The design uses pre-test and post-test to find out students' reading comprehension tests. After post-testing, the writer analyzed the data using independent sample testing. Since the data are not normally distributed, the writer analyzed the results using the Mann-Whitney-U test, 0.000. These results were negotiated with Sig's significance score (P-value) <α=0.05. Therefore, Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. In other words, it can be known from this research that summarizing strategies can improve students' reading comprehension. It can be concluded that the summary strategy has a significant influence on students' reading comprehension. Keywords: Summarizing Strategy, Reading Comprehension, Quasi- Experimental Design.
